Carburetors And Batteries
This article aims to educate the reader on two very important aspects of a car. These two components need to be maintained at optimum conditions to avoid car trouble, especially at odd times.
Two of the very important components of a car engine are carburetors and batteries. We shall discuss the working concept of both devices and how to troubleshoot the common problems that may occur due to them.
Carburetor
In order to understand the functions of a carburetor you first need to understand the logic behind starting up your car. It requires a mixture of fuel and air in an optimum amount so that the spark created by the spark plug starts the engine up. The carburetor is responsible for creating this mixture. Therefore, if the fuel composition is too high in the mixture then the engine will run rich causing it to not start at all or waste fuel. And if the air composition is too high then this will cause engine damage in addition to not starting the car as well.
In order to minimize emissions and fuel wastage most new cars nowadays come with fuel injection systems instead of carburetors.
Think of the carburetor as a tube with a throttle plate placed parallel along its length. This throttle plate allows air to flow at a high velocity so that enough vacuum is created into the juncture from where fuel can be sucked in for the engine to start up. When the engine is switched off, the throttle plate covers the air vent to prevent the air from entering.
Battery
The car battery is a rechargeable battery that provides electricity to your car for starting, lighting and ignition. Therefore, it is also popularly known as the SLI battery.
There are lead-acid batteries along with shallow cycle and deep cycle battery types as well.
The lead-antimony plates in the battery help it to conduct chargeable energy to the car. This requires water for electrolysis purposes. Now you know why people often pour water into the engine of a car!
If the water level is not maintained at an optimum level then the conducting plates can be damaged (too less water, causing exposure of the plates to air) or faster water consumption (too much water, causing over charge and breakup of water into hydrogen and oxygen).
Batteries should be charged before they lose their charge completely. They should also not be overcharged. It is also possible to store battery charge by using

additional batteries. These should be charged completely, with clean and pure water, and stored in a clean environment with low temperature and humidity.
There may be several problems that occur to your car battery:
1. If the positive and negative plates of chargeable plates merge together then the battery cells may be shorted.
2. This may also happen due to accumulation of shed plate particles in the plate below.
3. The plates and connections inside the battery may be broken due to wear and tear.
4. The terminals can break.
5. The electrolytic content may be too low.
6. The case of the battery may be damaged.
7. Sulfation may be caused if the battery has not been in use for a long time.
Evidently, one can experience a multitude of problems with a car and this can lead to messy situations. So, it is always advisable to know the basics of maintaining the various components of a car.
