If your battery dies and it cannot be recharged your left with no choice but to replace it. The car battery usually has a sticker on it that shows when you bought it and how long you can expect it to last. To extend its life, your battery should be checked and maintained regularly.
If you’ve decided to replace the battery yourself, the first thing to do is buy the right one. Keep the following in mind when buying a replacement battery:
Get a brand name battery at a trust worthy dealership or auto parts store.
Batteries are priced by how long they will last. Most are rated for a five year life span. If you’re planning on selling off your vehicle then don’t bother wasting money on a long term battery.
Take the newly purchased battery to your vehicle and compare it with your old one. When comparing it make sure its size, shape and configuration all match up, if not return it.
The main tool for the job for replacing a battery is an adjustable wrench. Some optional tools you may want to have handy are lint free rags, a pair of latex gloves, and a battery brush.
When you have all your equipment ready follow these steps for removal and installation of battery.
1. Make sure your engine is shut off and you have the parking brake on.
2. Open the hood.
3. Remove the cables from the battery terminals. (Check with your owners manual to see if you vehicle has a negative ground).
4. Remove the devices that are holding the battery in place.
5. When the battery is free, lift it out and place it out of your way.
6. Place the new battery in the tray where you removed the old one. Make sure it is facing in the same direction.
7. Secure the device that held the old battery in place.
8. Replace the cables on the terminals, if your vehicle has a negative ground the positive goes back on first.
9. Dispose of the old battery properly by taking it to a recycle center.
Batteries contain toxic, corrosive liquid and need to be disposed of properly. When buying a new battery they will usually take your old for not extra cost.
